Dr. Eugenie C. Scott announces that the 1000th member of NCSE's Project Steve is Professor Steve Darwin at the 2009 AAAS meetings. Project Steve is a mockery of creationist petitions attacking evolution education, with over 1000 scientists named Steve (or Stephanie, Esteban, Istvan, Ettiene, etc.) who affirm the importance of evolution in modern biology, and oppose the introduction of creationism into science classes. Scott and Scientific American writer Steve Mirsky explain the importance of being Steve, and describe the coveted Thumbless Panda Award.
