Nutty Professor had some genuine affection for the characters. You liked Murphy's fat relatives. Norbit was just hateful.

Norbit struck me as Eddie Murphy making fun of lower class African Americans (the kind you see on COPS and Jerry Springer) the way we British make fun of chavs. There's a thread on IMDB where someone asks if people have ever seen someone like Rasputia in real life and loads of people say "Yes! All the time!" It's still a crappy film but not quite as 1 demensional as it initially appears, I think Kermode might have missed this and assumed it was just about fat jokes and slapstick gags.

Eddie Murphy is an ingeniously talented comic actor, but he is also clearly thick as a redwood. Too bad, but shockingly, Murphy's last ten movies are twice as good as Martin Lawrence's.

Taddy Newton looked Ethiopian in that movie. It's like they tried to find the thinnest actress ever because there was a fat woman in it. She must be desperate as Hell to be in movies to starve herself like this.
