The Offshore Access System (OAS) consists of a 21m hydraulically operated telescopic gangway fitted with an active heave-compensation system. The OAS
incorporates a motion reference unit which, when engaged, maintains the
walkway tip at a constant height relative to the horizon. This allows the walkway
to connect to a fixed structure safely, in sea states currently up to 2.5 metres
significant wave height.
The heave compensation system is automatically enabled when in 'approach' mode -- this is when the gangway is slewed outboard from its cradle and extended to engage with a vertical pole on the installation.
