I remmeber this! My dads boss still wanted him to go to wrok as a client service agent, helping people manage thire payroll. He didn't go, they didn't fire him. My neighbor, a nurse, had a helicopter take her to work.
What I'll never forget is the blizzard of '93. I used to live on an enormous hill in the Philly area and I remember the power being out because everything had iced over. I also remember my mother and brother going outside and not being able to walk back up our backyard which was two levels. I lastly remember a mail truck trying to get up the hill and failing miserably. That storm closed school for two weeks.
OMG, I was a sophomore in high school when this happened. I went to school in MontCo so classes were cancelled for a week and a half. I think they even cancelled our exams.

If you lived in Philly when this happened you'll remember those days forever. Especially if you were a kid. It was awesome.

Generally before expected big storms the local stations puts some anchors/reporter in hotels within walking distance.
My father was an engineer for Amtrak in Philly, and he had to stay a few nights in a hotel because of this storm.
