Starting on Wednesday April 6, a series of radio ads will be broadcast on local Latino radio stations throughout the state of Kansas to demand that Kansas State Representatives Mario Goico (R-100), Reynaldo Mesa (R-123), and Ramon Gonzales (R-47) hold Representative Virgil Peck (R-11) accountable for his reckless remarks on immigrants and ask for his immediate resignation.
Earlier in March, Rep. Peck made headlines when, during an appropriations committee meeting, he made a reference to an agricultural program that controls the state's feral hog population by shooting them from helicopters. "Looks like to me, if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a [solution] to our illegal immigration problem," stated Rep. Peck. A couple of days after the hateful remarks, Latino Republican Representatives Goico, Mesa and Gonzales stood by Peck to accept his weak apology.
The message in the radio ads is clear, we demand that Reps. Goico, Mesa and Gonzales hold Peck accountable for his reckless remarks and ask for Peck's resignation."
Presente.org, a national online advocacy group that promotes the political empowerment of Latinos, recently coordinated a petition drive calling on Rep. Peck to resign from the Kansas State Legislature and for the state and national Republican Party to hold him accountable for his hateful rhetoric. As of today, this petition drive has gathered close to 57,000 signatures from people across Kansas and throughout the nation.
If Goico, Mesa & Gonzales actually back up what Peck said, then they are just as racist as he, PLUS, they have made themselves enemies of "their own people"(I don't no who their people are, because "Latinos" is not a people. It's a set of UNrelated peoples who are arbitrarily lumped together under one name), so we should demand they resignations, too.
