Episode Seven 2/7: Chile/Bolivia (arrival)

Starting the second half of his journey at Cape Horn, Palin views the end of the continent of South America. He travels through the southern islands of Chile to the town of Punta Arenas. He renews acquaintances with his guide from Pole to Pole and the statue of Ferdinand Magellan with the Indian whose toe he kissed to ensure a safe journey. Venturing through the islands, he views the Torres del Paine National Park and the grave of an English explorer who committed suicide in the area. At Chiloe Island, he chats with an American transplant who discusses the possible existence of witches on the island. Then he attends a local barbecue that included dancing and Palin attempting to play the horse's jawbone. North to Santiago, he observes a memorial to victims of the 1973 coup d'état. Driving through the Atacama Desert, Palin reaches the highest elevation of his life thus far. At the world's largest copper mine in Chuquicamata, Palin does the honors of counting down to the explosion. In the northern town of Arica, he catches a one-car train to La Paz in Bolivia. Things go smoothly until, as they are within striking distance of La Paz, the train has a freakish derailment. After several attempts to get the train back on line, they are successful and eventually reach the Bolivian capital in the black of night.

  • @manualidadesconninos I also appreciate that though he can't speak Spanish at least he tries :) That takes courage, speaking a foreign language is always rough for any traveler :) Again Kudos for uploading :)

  • @darksta01 Waoo muchas gracias por subir este video la verdad nunca habia visto lo lindo que es Chile :) Me encantan todos los videos de Michael Palin, es muy buen conductor :). I really have enjoyed all the videos you have uploaded from Michael Palin, the truth is that he is an excellent host and he gets to places where no other traveler gets to. Most travel shows have a guy going visiting hotels, museums, etc. Michael visits the real people and that is what I love about his show.

  • @patatacatalana +chiles pplz r noob

  • @patatacatalana youre just jealous cos we sank your armada

  • @patatacatalana I have just watched this episode and not once does he underrate, riddicule or scorn chilean nationals, and especially the Chiloe people. Not sure what you were watching!

Michael Palin has done many travel documentaries including Pole to Pole and around the world in 80 days, all of which have been excellent, informative and not once has he been anything other than open minded and interested in all the places and people Perhaps you should be abit more open minded and less scornful

  • I've never seen such a terrible travel documentary, it's really shocking the way this Mr. Palin underrates, ridicules and scorns chilean nationals, especially on the Chiloe eposide; something that in his colonial lingo would be "natives". It's by far the worst travel-log I've ever seen, and the worst of all, it's been edited and set to be commercialized, not just a natural camera travelling along...... some british travellers still think they are in the XVIII century

  • @InuyashaKnight thank you so much x
