@str8out Ever pooped in the woods? It doesn't take a great deal of earth to completely cover the scent of feces to human senses - a hole not more than a few inches deep does the trick quite nicely.

The other advantage to the "earth closet" (basically a composting toilet) is that by not mixing feces with water, it makes it much more difficult for dangerous gut bacteria (e.g. E. coli) to contaminate the water supply. The drying and composting of the fecal matter kills these bacteria, and makes a safe, effective compost.

@nikki1669 Urine also contains salts, and these can build up in your soil and make it unusable. Many people who don't have modern sanitation do use urine directly as a liquid fertilizer, though, with 1 part urine to about 8 parts water to keep the salt levels from becoming an issue. Works very well.
