In this television interview, Sarah Haacke, director of Facing History and Ourselves' Choosing to Participate initiative, encourages nominations for Washington, D.C.-area Upstanders--individuals, groups, or institutions that choose to take a positive stand and act on behalf of themselves and others. The Upstanders stories will accompany the Choosing to Participate travelling multimedia exhibition that encourages young people and adults to think about the importance of civic participation and to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a citizen in a democracy?" The exhibition, at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., from January 17 - June 17, 2011, features four compelling stories from across the United States about people and communities whose stories illustrate the courage, initiative, and compassion needed to protect democracy and human rights, as well as portraits of 25 local Upstanders.
