Shawn Mullins live at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA on November 24th, 2006 performing "Cold Black Heart" with band. Visit Shawn online www.shawnmullins.com his latest album "9th Ward Pickin' Parlor" available on Vanguard Records now!!!
The original studio recording is in F# flat, because we built the song around the lick that shawn played on the charanga. He didn't tune it, just played it. Everyone had to tune around him. We do it in drop D live because it's easy for shawn to play the melody around that tuning when he's playing by himself.
The video was shot in color, but due to low lighting it looked better in black and white. We filmed this one for fun as a trial for the DVD we shot the following year.
I used to be a huge Shawn Mullins fan, and kinda quit listening to him a few years back. (I'm a metalhead actually) but born and raised in Tennessee so I've always had a soft spot for bluegrass/folk music. just happened to hit a depressing state of mind and thought I'd look him back up. I've gotta say 9th Ward Pickin Parlor, (this song especially) has definitely got me back as a fan. this song is bloody amazing. listened to it like 4 times in a row when i first heard it.
Geeze I wish they had filmed this in COLOR! My cousin Gerry plays drums for SM's,at least I can see him better in this video than in a few others, lol. LuvYa Ger!

I miss the good old days where there were like 30 people squeezed in upstairs at Eddie's Attic and Shawn knew most of them by name.

Great tune well done ! Study carefully Di. Appears to be in "D" which makes sense for mandolin.
