I'm pretty sure this is a comma butterfly (verification appreciated), spotted on a fine day last October '08 on the valley of the river Tavy near Tavistock in West Devon, eating the last of the blackberries. I've read they will sometimes survive the winter as adults so maybe this one's sticking around until next year?

  • Hi Secretpenfold! I just spotted one of these in my garden and someone confirmed it as a Comma Butterfly so I found my way to your video and posted as a response. I think there's a few hundred miles between our finds... and you are right the wing outline is amazing!

  • Hi, thanks for the comment! I'm glad the camma species are so widely dispersed !

Very best to you, Secret P

  • Looks like a comma to me. I've never seen so many as I did this summer. Aren't they gorgeous?

  • Hi HarvyCola and thanks for your comment! This was the first time I've really seen one up close, but they are definitely incredibly beautiful as you say. The wing outline is amazing.

  • Very beautiful butterfly ! Thank you so much for posting .

    Enjoyed it ! :)

  • Ive got a "still" of it on "INSECTS" at 2.12

  • Hi Secret, Ive got what I thought was an unusual variation of a Comma, the usual ones I see are a much richer colour with ragged wings, this as you will see, is lighter in colour, and much smoother! Funny thing is, after spotting this one, every one I saw last year was similar??? Check my 2 videos.

  • Me too...I think it's because there were many blackberries too....they seem to love them.

  • Same here...first time this year I have seem them close but I didn't succeed to make a video as they always went away each time I was close to them.

I think we mainly can see them on blackberry bushes.
