@arenastorichardson actually, it's the other way around.. as time has gone on from the historical UFC 1, fighters have had their specialty and added the other tools for defensive reasons, but today's mixed martial artist is TRULY well-rounded, excelling in all 3 mma areas: striking, submission grappling, and cardio.
i joined american pankration 2wks ago after being at ACS, RITC,PHX fight club and la boxing...PANKRATION is by far the best school in AZ...the way jeff and his instructors teach it allows you to learn way faster than the other places. All the other schools just kinda pick a move to teach that day with no explanation of how or why or when to use or how to get into position to use....jeff has a more sysytematic approach and now i understand how, why and when to domoves n one day builds on the next
I like jeff. I trained with him for 3 years. He taught me some good stuff. He also introduced me to Dan Henderson, Randy Couture, and Rulon Gardner. They are all close friends from the olympic wrestling days...
but now, UFC fighters are more specialized. Rather than being a Pankration fighter, and skilled at everything..fighters have their strong backgrounds (wrestling, boxing, muay tai etc) and use other skills as secondary tools

He may have brought it to Arizona in the 1990s, but he didn't reinvent pankration. Jim Arvanitis reinvented pankration in the early '70s.
