Capt. Bob Cottle of Channel 5, Boston gives a Sunday morning drawing lesson, from 1975. You can hear the "Magic Window" theme music at the end.

Besides giving drawing lessons, in a prior incarnation Capt. Bob presented illustrated adventures starring Jasper, Gramps, and Herkimer Kiwi.

  • I have read "Captain Bob" also hosted a nationally-syndicated cartoon series, "Ruff N Reddy." I vaguely recall having wtached "Ruff 'N Reddy," but have no memory of "Captain Bob" hosting the series, juistthe cartoons.

Cottle was a congenial children's TV show host, as well a talented artist & teacher of drawing. Too bad no video of "Captain" Bob Cottle's WHDH series seems to have survived.

  • @gymnastix I also don't remember Capt. Bob's association with R+R, but reliable sources insist it was so. I do remember Jimmy Blaine hosting those cartoons, along with two parrots named Rhubarb and Jose.

  • I had no problem getting up early on Saturday to watch Captain Bob! It was so great to see it again! I couldn't remember the theme song, but as soon as I heard the song, it all came back to me! I would also watch the Barbapapas early that morning, which I can't find much about either. Fruity Pebbles and Saturday mornings in the 70s were the best!

  • Thank you for posting this video!!!

  • Yes, I remember the 1960s incarnation of "Captain Bob," with the puppet "Jasper." It aired on the original WHDH-TV, Channel 5 on the television dial, before losing its license to a consortium called Boston Broadcasters, Inc., who founded the current Channel 5., WCVB.

I think the earlier "Captain Bob" show was essentially to provide local wrap segments of. Cottle hosting nationally-syndicated cartoons. I don't recall which cartoons aired, though.

  • Captain Bob inspired me to pursue artistic pursuits and this video is a tiny little gem from my childhood. I absolutely loved this show and never missed an episode! Thank you so much for posting it.

  • I was lucky enough to do a phone interview with"Capt.Bob"back in the early 1990's..he became my dearest friend..even though..we never met in person. We kept in touch via phone conversations..when he died in northern,Cal. in the spring of 1999.(Crying)It broke my heart.

  • Dear Pebey,The characters of"Jasper","Gramps","Herkimer Kiwi"and'Mr.Answer The Magic Talking Question Box"were also seen as puppets..when"Capt.Bob"Cottle was the second and last host/performer of NBC TV's/Hanna & Barbera's"Ruff & Ready Show"in the 1960's.

  • This is exactly how I remember how the show was coming into our house way up in Berwick, ME, with just a plain old T.V. antenna. Even though the reception wasn't very good, I used to jump out of bed early on Saturday mornings and just be in awe on how well and quickly Capt. Bob could draw. Thanks for posting this, it brought back some great childhood memories!

  • What a wonderful show that was! I loved drawing with Capt Bob when I was a kid. The only real challange was waking up in time on Saturday morning. I believe he was on at 7:00.
