This is the analog signoff on WRAL, channel 5, in Raleigh NC. They went off the air at 12:55pm on June 12, 2009. They went off the air in a very fun, classy fashion. They went into the control room, and hit the button while on the air. As soon as the button got pressed.... STATIC!

Please excuse the quality of this video, but I was using a little, dinky antenna, sitting in my bedroom.

  • I'd say they handled their signoff better than their cross-town rivals at WTVD did.

  • I agree! They just shut it off in the middle of a commercial... hehe

  • me 2. i was expecting static, but wtf was that screetchy sound?

  • I was so pissed, the switch was supposed to be on my birthday. Well, i guess some people just don't like doing their job correctly.

  • Ah. I stand corrected. Thank you.

  • Actually in that market the 'double rescan' was required, where you unplugged to clear the coverter box memory out and did the re-scan. With WTVD moving back to 11, WNCN back to 17, and WRDC back to 28 for their digital signals, it was best to just clear out all the old channels and start all over fresh again rather than do a rescan which included dead channels. So it was appropriate advice.
