The all-famous English folksong Greensleeves, here performed in a distinct renaissance style by the Baltimore Consort.
Perhaps this is close to how it originally sounded?

  • It's lovely, a wonderful, inventive set of "divisions". The melody is not hanging out consistently in the top voice in an obvious way, and there is excellent period ornamentation, so maybe some people cannot hear it. It certainly is Greensleeves. Catch it for sure starting at 2:52 in the flute.

  • @manthasagittarius1 Exactly, thank you for your input.

  • ...I walked through Edinburgh the other day and for whatever reason this song got stuck in my head...and I just stumbled across this wonderful piece of music today (yes, it has been stuck in my head for quite some time)...and it makes me smile...connected with beautiful memories of a lovely trip far away from home...I play piano and this was one of my first pieces I learnt...but this composition is just mesmerizing :)

  • at first it sounded nothing like the one i thought...but it is! sounds brilliant, been stuck in my head for a couple days now

  • @Zarataphs It's several variations on a theme (quite lovely), but, unlike most such efforts, it doesn't bother to start off with the unaltered theme by itself (as in Bach's Goldberg Variations).

  • @Zarataphs You'd be hard pressed not to recognise it at places like 0:34 - 0:44, I don't know what he's talking about.

  • Whoops

  • cuando caliente el sole

  • @PERROMALDO far as I've ever heard most Renaissance styles of a lot of musical pieces are more whimsical and sort of softer i guess, not sure how to word it. It's Greensleeves tho, plain as day.

  • I just LOVE this version ... really wonderfull .. does remind me of a fancy time, ... and me walking as a wealthy guy .. and everyone bow for me ...hmmmmmmmm really stupid .. but it does remind me of Solitude in the new game called Skyrim .. me walking there as a noble man haha .. wonderfull music really .. LOVE IT .. really royal !

  • this is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard

  • @kungfuasgaeilge Why, it does have a meter-shift doesn't it. :) I do love this arrangement!
