This is a biographical account of heavyweight champion Charles L. "Sonny" Liston (May 8, 1932 January 5, 1971). This video is courtesy of ESPN and SportsCentury. I videotaped this show when it aired on the ESPN Classic Sports channel and now I recorded it off my TV. The quality is not too bad so enjoy. Do NOT compare Ali to Mayweather.

Ali was not a punk, or a product of his time.

Ali WAS his time, was the 1960's- and beyond.

Ali "shook up the world" as few did. As when a Catholic, JFK, took office. As when MLK went to the mountaintop. As when four lads from Liverpool played music together.

What made him great? He didn't CARE about conduct, not about race, religion, political dogma...

He was his own man and every fight, in and out of the ring, he proved what a free man can do.

if liston had the same facilities as ali when he was 12 liston would have grown up to be UNSTOPPABLE and i mean literally he would have broke marcianos record with ease and would have retired un defeated and broke george foremans record or percentage of knockouts he would have been the greatest.

@obiwanobiwan13 I respectfully disagree. Ali didn't care about race or religion? His whole persona was based on it! He was his own man? Not really, he became a puppet for the Muslims, doing whatever "the honorable" Elijah Muhammad told him to. His racist attitude got so extreme, that at one point, his idol, Sugar Ray Robinson, didn't want anything to do with him.

there seems to be a common theme for many boxing greats:

bad home life

leads to crime

leads to prison

gets in boxing program in prison

gets noticed in the boxing program

starts training seriously

becomes champion

Times change. The naacp petitioned Patterson to not fight Liston because he set a bad example for black youth. Everyone ducked Liston . Sonny would have Knocked Tyson RTFO. BTW going into the civil war.1860 census there were about 4 milion slaves in America.

@AlexiusMoore I kid you not, a total of 60 million African's died coming from Africa on a slave ship, an European who wrote the history of this said so (So you can't use race in this)... 15 million Africans made it in America. But of course a significant amount of Africans were killed off in America from brutality and torture from Europeans, so it cut it down to probably 9 million.

@AlexiusMoore At least 10-15 million bought African's were brought to America, 2 million died on the way here. Then the Europeans used the bought slaves as bait to catch and steal more slaves, probably millions more. It was also estimated during the Atlantic slave trade, about 60 million African slaves died, and that's not including America. The reason why the number was that high,was because the slaves were also exported to the Atlantic. Arabia, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, N India. No your history
