Anna McLean is an 11 year old living with Type 1 diabetes. Many people think that if you watch what you eat and get exercise, you can avoid diabetes. This is simply not true.
Anna was diagnosed at 7 years of age. There was no way around her contracting this chronic illness. She now lives with it every day until a cure is found.

  • My daughter, Brooke, is 13 years old. She is extremely athletic, outgoing, a straight A student, a member of National Junior Honor Society, and was diagnosed two days ago with type 1 diabetes. Is there anything you would say to her or any tips you or Anna would give her?

  • @trqueripel I would love to email you. I have lots of great info. for you and your daughter. Please send me an address where I can contact you if you'd like.

  • I have family members with t1 diabetes (in fact, all of my siblings except me). I had problems with gluten, but the A1 beta casein (found in dairy foods) seems to be a common trigger for type 1 diabetes. A2 milk is sold at the grocery stores here in Australia now, and I've been sticking with A2 milk and am off soy. Have you tried a product blogged on glutenfreesoyfree(dot)wordpress(dot)com/2011/09/13/possible-solution-gluten-intolerance/ for her T1 DM? celiac and t1 are related so may help

  • I could not even imagine having this horrible disease when I was a kid. I was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 43 last April and boy has it been a rocky road full of pot holes and huge obstacles to overcome.

One day you can have very dangerously high highs and the next dangerously low lows and that's with eating the same things and same amount of exercise.

I pray everyday that my kids never get this horrible disease and also pray for a cure.

  • @GenMata You're right on. Anna definitely enjoys all those high carb foods, like most 12 year olds. :)

  • @christimclean1313 I understand but my point is that she eats things that runs her glucose way up. I just thought that was harmful to allow the glucose to go so high. Low carbs would keep it from getting up so high..

Cinnamon pills would also help keep the glucose down too.

    Have a bless day

  • @tonyrees68 Good luck with your pump. I'm sure you'll find a new freedom from needles. God bless!

  • @GenMata I've heard that about cinnamon. A low carb diet is good, however, unlike Type 2, it won't change the fact that Anna requires insulin. We will never be able to "undo" Type 1 diabetes. Thanks for the info. I appreciate it!!
