Chris Rutter teaches you the basics of wireless flash systems. He also goes into detail by showing you the basic settings for wireless flash with a Nikon D300 and an SB-800 flashgun.

  • Thanks so much! I've been attempting to accomplish this using Nikon's user manual for a while with no luck. This has me up and running within 4 minutes. Awesome! Thanks!

  • Thanks a lot for the tutorial man, really good explained!

  • mine has a cord somtimes it flashes sometimes not :(

  • I have a question - how do you get your 580EX II to work in a softbox?

I just bought a Photoflex Flash trigger/receiver and it didn't work. When I take a picture using my Canon 50D the flash isn't firing off and when I pressed the test button on the trigger the flash did fire.

It's just whenever I take a picture, the flash isn't firing. is there some sort of special setting that I need to do on my camera?

If you can help me, that would be great. Thank you.

  • @jigsawpk the in-camera flash sets of pre flashes a split second before the shutter goes. these send a signal to the external flash after the camera calculates the required amount of light (it does this all within less than a second). For this reason, the light from the in-camera flash has to be within range of the external unit, so the receiver can pick it up. something like the su-800 uses infra-red instead, so you have a much longer range and can use it on really sunny days.

  • Great

  • So does this mean that I don't need any sort of wireless transmitter?

Even if the settings are changed I still don't understand how does the flash gun know when to pop? :S

  • Congrats! Brazil congrats for you job! thank you for your post!

  • thank you sooo much for this tutorial!!
