    Much was said about barriers to attendance, chiefly the formalities of concerts. Yet the most important barrier is one I choose not to worry about: that most people don't respond to serious music. Virtually all have the opportunity to listen to classical music through today's media, yet few do so. And that's fine.

    There are so many people who do respond to this music yet don't attend. They're the most likely new audiences for live music.
