A guy made this interactive thing with ferrofluid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrofluid it had two magnets, one in the top, one in the bottom. when people turned handles on the sides, it raised and lowered the magnets.

The Amount of fluid was about 12 oz. The distance from the top plate to the bottom plate was around 8 or 10 inches. maybe less.
