Indonesia is leading a group of around 20 nations calling for financial compensation if they act to save their rainforests.

The alliance, known as the Forestry 8, will be formally announced on Monday, during talks at the UN on climate change.

The rainforest nations want incentives not to cut down their forests in the first place.

  • The developed countries like Korea, Japan, China buy Indoneasian teakwood to make those Oriental furniture that sell for thousands of dollars to other Asian countries Australia, Europe and America. U.K. and USA buy hardwood furnitures from Philippines, China and Indoneasia, Africa. Stop the buying, it will stop the cutting of rainforest trees.

  • it is a Damning critique of western media that the Most Powerful investigative journalism is coming from a group that a few years ago was running on a shoestring. If you want hard-hitting journalism, and you want it in good quality video available anywhere in the world, you want AlJazeera English

  • the forests are being wiped out to grow more veges. Eat a balanced diet, as humans are supposed to eat, and you will have less footprint on earth. Dont be wasteful.

  • I think the world agrees that 'politicians must be educated about a green planet!' Our planet is not a mall. It has a life of its own.

  • A: We have to understand firstly this is not decades ago this is now. if we look carefully we do not have much left firstly. Secondly our resources are vanishing quickly ... developed nations have to take the lead in comming up with smart management techniques or methods to be passed on to the developing nations & put in practise.

Finally ... money or monies are no the way ...

politicians must be educated about a green planet !

  • If we as a planet want to survive, we must work with other nations to preserve forests and ecosystems, and asking them to do it 'because it's good for all of us' and not actually providing some concrete incentives isn't going to get much done.

  • wait, so how should we encourage developing nations Not to chop down all of their trees? Developed nations did that for decades to fuel their progress, vast tracks of the US east coast used to be forested, but it was cut down for farmland. wonder where Else in the world that is happening today??

  • Well said. Very well said.

  • Now anything to save the enviroment.

But there should not be any financial reward.

If F8 wants to put up this conditions then might not as well do IT.
