I was asked to search for this piece, and it sounded familiar. I then found out that all of the modern music in Civ IV is composed by John Adams...probably because that's the one of the few things people can stand listening to while they spend hours trying to launch a spaceship

I'd always found myself a bit frightened to try and get into any kid of classical music because of how daunting the prospect of attempting to breach this vast world of different orchestras and composers etc is
but the other day I realised as I was listening to a nice bit of harsh noise that "this is ridiculous, I'm sure classical music can't possibly be as unfriendly to the uninitiated as merzbow or masonna" and so a quick google of some contemporary composers later and here I am!

I might have sounded as somewhat of an asshole, sorry. You didn't do or say anything that could offend anyone I think. I had seen your second comment prior to responding.
I'm interested in music in which every bar introduces new ideas and high variance, and although that's not the case in John Adams' work I can't bring myself to saying that this is repetitive in any way. That being said, I'm not questioning your taste or perception, I'm genuinely interested in what makes you think that way.

As I stated, this is my liking in music, as my second comment shows. I enjoy the piece, and I am sure the technical side of this piece is something to marvel at, but I find it a bit repetitive. By no means am I an authoritative critic on orchestral music, but again, this is simply my taste. And I wasn't entirely negative towards this piece. Please do not be offended.

Interpolate, please, I want to know how changing the harmonic content and introducing variation every two or four bars is repetitive?

A bit too repetitive. Like the tension it builds though, which is pretty much the entire piece.
