Thanks for this Al. I remember Bill well. My dad put on many "backyard" jazz festivals back in the 60's and 70's and Bill was the focal point (how could he not be if he was there!). Some fond memories include the day after a late night jam when Bill's cornet couldn't be found. We all knew it lay somewhere sinking in the muck of the back creek after Bill had no doubtedly thrown it there "in celebration".

I think I played at one or more of your dad's parties. Bill was a real character and a fine musician. I sure miss him.

Do they still have a jazz festival in Manassas VA?

No. The promoter, Fat Cat McCree, died several years ago. (Fat Cat announces the musicians in this video.) The annual Manassas Jazz Festival was his project. No one has taken it over since he died.
