Jumpin' East of Java by Brian Setzer (2000 VaVoom! Album)
Vocal Solo with Jazz Ensemble. By Brian Setzer. Composed by Brian Setzer. Arranged by Roger Holmes. Vocal Solo/Jazz Ensemble Series. Published by Hal Leonard. (2500941)
In the early '80s, Setzer formed the Stray Cats, a rockabilly band that took England by storm and then came back home to convert audiences in the U.S.
The Brian Setzer big band helped define a new era of uptempo swing style charts. This clever tune from his Vavoom! CD works great for vocalist and is a blast for the band to play as well. Includes plenty of tutti ensemble feature spots as well as solos for tenor and trumpet. From ArtistDirect.com
Senior Sherinda Bryant (vocals) is another of Dr. Kopplins Vocalists in the tradition of Big Bands. You may recall seeing her earlier this year in the 4th Songwriter Showcase: Original songs written and performed by Cal Poly Pomona students and alumni. (Thursday, February 26, 2009, 8:00 PM) along with Candice Brown, Kateri Lirio. And The Polyphonics (Craig Tsurumoto and Jeanette Lawler). Proceeds from the concert go to scholarships for Music Industry Studies students. Good stuff!
Along with Sherinda is the battling saxophones of Darrell Tung and James Goese. All in all, very reminiscent of the Big Sound of the 30s Big Bands.
This show was sold out. So get there early or use Zaptix.com if you dont miss the Best Big Band Jazz in SoCal (even if its Rockabilly).
If this kind of Student-Empowering Progressive Music Department sounds interesting to you, visit the Cal Poly Music Department at http://www.class.csupomona.edu/mu Ed. note: A frequent viewer ("GlendaleJazzSingerFan") comments - How does Dr. Kopplin find them (ed. outstanding vocalists); Ms. Rowena Dineros, Ms. Loren Vasquez, Ms. Alyssa Donaldson, Ms. C (ed. Candice) Brown and now, Ms. Sherinda Bryant! Be There or Be Square!

OK Jazz Fans, the next Showtime is coming up on March 9, 2010 at 8PM. Be there or be square. Better than those lousy chick flicks that they palm off on us at the CinePlex.
