We catch up with the one and only "frugal zealot," Tightwad Gazette author Amy Dacyzyn. Her message is that frugality works, both in good times and bad. She shares both practical and philosophical advice on how to save money, reduce living expenses and stay happy practicing frugality.

Why? Let me introduce you to a REAL woman. Were you expecting an airbrushed supermodel? She's a mom with six kids and has done really well for herself despite her (gasp!!!) teeth. Get real.

Used items are always sterlized before using them. Wipe used earrings down with isopropyl alcohol. Wash clothes in bleach or pinesol before wearing. People are so strange about having used stuff. There is so much used stuff in the US it is crazy to buy new.

Does anyone know what or where I can find the recipe for Amy's versatile fridge dough?

I have a pair of Eastland leather shoes that are the most comfortable shoes I own and I wear them just about every day. They were $5 at Goodwill. I checked their website, and these retail for $60. Booyah!

The key is being frugal in other areas so that you can afford to own and heat your dream house.

We weren't home schooled, nor were we isolated. Don't worry. :) We turned out OK. (Jamie)

I often wonder what happened with her kids. I got her newsletter for a long time and then she said something about - I don't know if she was into homeschooling? - anyone know? - and it sounded like she was isolating her kids. I know of two families who didn't want their kids exposed to "The World" and only hang out with each other. With DIRE results, if you get my drift. That turned me off. Saving buttons and growing your own tomatoes? Great. Warping your kids? ewwww.

Amy posted a recipe for Sloppy Joes one time and I lost it. At first I didn't know what to think about Amy but I loved her advise.

Its in the book-a lot of basic recipes. My favorite was the pizza dough. Family loved it.

I would agree if it weren't for all the highly educated MBA's that I am competing with right now for jobs-doing administrative assistant type of work. Its not about saving buttons, its about making very conscious choices in how you spend money-a great education is part of the picture, not the whole picture. Both Amy and her husband are educated, most educated professionals are in debt-unless you spend less than you make, you will never make enough!
