fjansz; I've just realised that 'Epiphone' have re-released the Wilshire in 2006. With the same specifications as in 1963...and it's quite inexpensive.
I think this clip is from "Pieces & Bits". Such a shame about the quality but then i suppose the cameraman was probably as high as a kite! I love Johnny's musicianship but can take or leave Edgar especially when he starts screeching.(my apologies for this comment)
fjansz; Thanks for telling us about the 'Epi Wilshire'! I always thought it was a "Coronet" but you are 100% right. Personally i always thought his tone on this guitar was the BEST ever that he obtained. They were fairly cheap when they came out and as you say, they are very difficult to find today. Nice and light & with a fast, sleek neck.
SLMNSMRT; I was fortunate enough to be at the Royal Albert Hall gig in April,1970. One of the best ever gigs i've ever seen!(even better than when i saw Jimi H) Winter was at his best during 1970..raw, frenzied and aggressive. There's a bootleg video of that RAH gig flying around and you wouldn't believe the version of "Talk To Your Daughter". Johnny nearly catches fire.
Pretty wild stuff! I love the version of this on the Live at Albert Hall cd.
bopalena: No question he's great. I'm seeing him for the third time this year next week. I hope he's getting physical therapy for the hip, etc., though. I know he's been through a lot, but he looks pretty damn frail and needs to get stronger for his comeback.
This is Woodstock isn't it? Pity of the sound quality. Both brothers are very talented guys, abel to make a crowd go crazy on their music. It's almost gospel, which isn't strange, both grew up in a gospel/blues community in Missisipi. Check out the rest of the Johnny Winter videos and see how he evolved through the years. He's a lifelong embassador of the blues, a true living legend and also a kind person. If I could only lay my hands on the Epiphone Wilshire he plays in the video!
I'm a friend of Johnny's and he WAS in bad shape. He's gotten his shit together, he's in great shape and playing and singing like he used to. See him when he plays near you and you'll see I'm not lyin'. SEE HIM!!! Your ears and soul will thank you.
Tell the Truth! this is way better quality than Pieces and Bits. but thats cool too! thanks!
