The Lyre River Campground is a fine Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hidden gem that has everything going for it--excellent location (not far from beaches or mountains or towns), overlooked and little used, fine fishing (including it's own species of trout) and it's free!

23 acres with a private feel to it, the campground is 15 miles from where the scenic Lyre River empties into the ocean. Lake Crescent is the river's source.

Fishermen like the campground, sometimes has good salmon fishing during migrations. A wheelchair-accessible fishing pier is shown in video.

from Stephani and Tom Stienstra at nwresource.com:

There are 10 primitive tent sites. Picnic tables, fire grills, tent pads, vault toilets, and drinking water are provided. A roofed group shelter is available. Leashed pets are permitted

Directions: From Olympia on I-5, take U.S. 101 and drive north 127 miles to a fork with Highway 112 (five miles past the town of Port Angeles). Turn west (right) on Highway 112 and drive about 15 miles to Milepost 46. Look to the right for a paved road between Mileposts 46 and 47; then turn north and drive 0.4 mile to the camp entrance road on the left.

Contact Information: Department of Natural Resources, Olympic Region, 411 Tillicum Lane, Forks, WA 98331-9797; 360/374-6131, fax 360/374-5446

  • @super456123 The Lyre river is the only water outlet for Lake Cresent. Connected by impassable falls a mile or so down river from the lake. Everybody has their own favorite, but just about any stream will have steelhead in it come winter. I drift corkies but theres about as many techniques as there are fishermen. If you fish Forks then youll miss the Lyre its off hwy 112. Roe in the summer (summer fish are hard to find and spooky) Good luck

  • @theatariplayer Yes it is but when the winds pick up in the fall youll probably die if your in there! Seriously. Its no longer a free campground you need whats called an adventure pass. $30 annually $1 daily. Also the snow in winter makes it hard goin but the fishings great in winter.

  • Then Let's all watch the buddys of the far left (Gov Gregoire luvs him) Exposed for the loon he really is! On YouTube video: ......Van Jones Espousing Communism & Progressive Spiritual Activism

  • Another State park with no future budget to maintain it. Far left fools got given government jobs. By the far left fools that voted them in. They then get "rewarded" with MAJOR MONEY for their pet projects. The RE$ULT? Washington $TATE is now bankrupt. Congrats. to all the dumb fools & demorats who destroyed & dug into the wallet of Washington State until they found the bottom empty. Now? Gregoire - Murray - & Cantwell - Dicks - & the rest?
