I can remember first hearing this in 1972. I was mezmorized by the honesty of the lyrics. Made me want to write songs.

@bjbinmke We all get old, if we're lucky - don't knock it. :-) You were fortunate to have been there when Laura put this out

@ImaniHekima: I bought that album in 1971 (vinyl) I wore it out...... I'm just way too old.

I would have hurried home and stayed there for this lonely woman.
I would have been there for her for whatever she needed or wanted my hand would be ready.
I absolutely loved Laura with all of my soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Janis knew "The Blues" and the Nyro song begins, "No one knows the blues / Like lonely women do / No one knows the blues / Like lonely women." Compare the lyrics in Janis's "Turtle Blues."
I'm just like a turtle
Hidin' underneath its hardened shell.
I'm very well protected -
I know this goddamn life too well

Yes, I always wondered about that picture of Janis Joplin being associated with this song. I'm sure Laura had a lot on her mind but I doubt if Janis Joplin was one of them. Who knows. There's a million shades of gray. All I know, for me, no one else's music has moved me in quite the same way as Laura's That's why I call her a true gift from God.
I don't know why Janis's pic is on this song unless its because she was a lonely woman.... as for Janis not taking to Laura... Laura was very serious about her music .. she even scolded the audience if they hooted and hollered during her performance ... Janis was ... well Janis.. pretty f'd up... i loved her to death but the girl was a hot mess.

@peaceme2 Janis was a very lonely woman. She thought that if you were in the music scene you had to live life on the edge.

I know. I thought about that after I finished it. I might redo it with other female blues artists.
