Candice performing her song "Can't Stand Goodbyes". This song is written from the first person point of view of a Cherokee on the Trail of Tears. The song has special meaning for Candice, being a registered Native American herself.

CAN'T STAND GOODBYES
by Candice Jarrett

One foot before the other
I could breathe in the whole sky
but my FEET can't STAND goodbyes.

Asequui (Free) I feel the Earth beneath my feet
Sea to Shining Sea
A home for all
But none for me.
asequui

My smile was hear to greet you.
So many tears fall from just one face
As you're standing in my place.

asequui I feel the Earth beneath my feet
Sea to Shining Sea
A home for all
But none for me.
asequui

One Path, and I must take it.
Don't know where I'm going to...
Or what's gonna become of you.

My face is forever changing.
I cried as you cut my hair.
I didn't know that I needed fixing.

asequui I feel the Earth beneath my feet
Sea to Shining Sea
A home for all
But none for me.
asequui

One foot before the other.
I could breathe in the whole sky,
But my feet can't stand goodbyes.

*** Asequui means "free" in Cherokee

  • I'm not here to somehow make it seem as if the atrocities that "white" (quotations because white is a color, not a race) people inflicted upon the natives here in america were any less than that, atrocities. But even I, who am Portuguese and Irish, can trace my blood back far enough to where my ancestors were discriminated against and murdered. Every race has, at one point or another, been oppressed; it'd be wise to remember that.

  • im half english and american and i inherited some cherokee from my american side and i have a brownish complexion and i dont know much about the cherokee people but i am going to try and learn stuff :D x Beautiful song good job :) x
