Simple penetration and expansion test of the .380 ACP Remington Golden Saber 102 gr JHP, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to calibrated ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, retained weight, and various close-up views of the bullet. Test gun was a Bersa Thunder 380 Plus, 3.5" barrel. Advertised muzzle velocity is 940 fps, my 5-shot average was 906 fps.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

  • Hey tnoutdoors9, I know it is a lot of work to set up the gelatin. Why not, in instances like this, when you have essentially a recognized fmj-like passthru, fire another one into the block just to see if that one expands? You shouldnt have to worry about the block being inconsistent if all the first bullet did was pass through, IMHO. Thanks again!

  • @Yeongugwan808

Always the possibility of a second shot crossing through the original bullet path. To remind me of this, I have that scene from Ghostbusters running through my mind......"do not cross the streams".

  • What bullet do you suggest for the .380?

  • @revgotchrist

I still have more to test and to this point, August 2011, nothing has impressed me. There do seem to be some consistencies with loads generally staying in the 10 to 11 inch range for penetration. Expansion is what it is for the weight and diamter of the bullet, given these velocities. Sooner or later I'll try some FMJ in the block, although I cannot advocate that anyone carry FMJ for self defense, in any caliber.

I really don't have any plans to test .22 mag. Before I get asked again, no plans to test .25 or .32. However, I'm leaning more and more toward getting a .22 LR handgun and testing everything out there using this same format, including solids. I have been so infatuated with .22's lately that I'm eating them in my cereal.

  • Bleah! No expansion. A very expensive FMJ result. Winchester PDX1 is much better.

  • @tnoutdoors9

You might want to look into coconut shells as a stand-in for bone.

  • finnaly found one that penatrates threw xD

  • @koskey06 kiss ass....lol.. but your right tnoutdoors9 is the man when it comes to firearm and ammo testing...

  • Have you decided on a favorite 380 load and if so why?

  • keep up the good work.

  • I always appreciate ammo test in the various self defense caliber. Thanks. What I would love to see also is some tests really simulating a center of mass shot. Layer of clothing, A layer of bone/material to simulate the rib cage, a foot (approx) of gelatin and another layer of bone for back of ribcage to see expansion/penetration though ribs and soft tissue. I seems to me that strictly gelatin would simulate only passing between ribs both front and back. Just thoughts.

  • I am amazed at this one also, it did not expand and went through the whole gelatin block.

  • Why are people talking crap!!! This is one of the best ammo testing guy I found on youtube!!! These videos are just for referince and to give a "idea" of how the ammo performs!! Thanks for all the great test, it helps me pick out a defence round to buy when I get a new gun. Keep up the good work and if there is anything I can do to help let me know.

  • @myantispambox Do tell us about your first hand experiences, like all the bad guys you have actually shot? And pray tell us all about your many bad guy shoot outs?

And how you know first hand because you actually shot someone with JHP,and watched them die?Than you personally attended the autopsy? What a joke, I have personally and physically arrested well over a 1000 law violators, and Attended autopsies, and never shot anyone, both as a Cop, and a Sheriff what a joke, naive, really.
