  • All they show is the communist side of the story but no one hears about how the communist disrespected everything the country did. If the country wanted to get up they tried to bring us down.

  • Thanks for sharing that. When people with personal experience like yourself way in it helps the rest of us get closer to the full story.

    So thanks again.

  • A rather large number of Latin and Central Americans who've migrated to the United States were affluent members of their former societies.

In a sense, they were proponents of the continuation of inequality in those societies, so therefore they side with individuals like Pinochet, who violently opposed socialists and other radical redistributionists.

  • Interesting. Thanks for sharing that perspective. It's helpful to here what different people have to say to get a better understanding.

  • He's covered more than fifty countries on five continents and served as the Latin America correspondent for The Boston Globe and later as The New York Time's bureau chief in Managua, Berlin, and Istanbul.

Specficially, you might check out the overview of his journalistic research in his book, Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq.

  • Thanks for sharing your insight, perspective and experience.

These are certainly complex issues that require a lot of thought. Also for your consideration, check out award-winning foreign correspondent Stephen Kinzer's work.

  • gracias a pinochet tengo que:

    pagar por mi salud

    pagar por mi educacion

    pagar por mi futura pension

ya que dejo todo en manos de extranjeros

    gracias pinochet fuck you!!!!

  • That's what I'm afraid of, a wrong has been done to a country, and people want to get defensive. As a superpower we have a history of imposing our will on other nations and for our selfish interests which at times is against the welfare of these peoples, some think that's okay I don't...

  • Check the facts although Chile has survived DESPITE Pinochet. I love the fact that you said 'who am I to decide' since you think it's ok 'to decide who should run Chile. (And stop the commie nonsense) Again, when is Kissinger going to get his medal???

  • You know any history about Chile during this era??? The U.S. was throwing money around like crazy! One Chilean president? How about the entire population of that country??? You are on the wrong side of history.

  • So, you're talking about an award from one Chilean president. also, the Chilean chamber of deputies and the Supreme Court during the Allende regime called for his removal. The Chilean chamber of deputies accused Allende of seeking to "establishing a totalitarian system.'' When mourning Stalin, Allende praised him and declared that he was a Marxist, which is something leftist revisionist "historians" deny.

  • No, the people in Chile are not more poor than before. Chile has a prosperous economy thanks to the Pinochet regime listening to the chicago Boys. Who are you to decide what's irrelevant to me?

  • Hamshow, nice analysis on what a fact is. But that's not what this discussion is about.

  • Senator Kennedy had received a visit this week from Chilean President Michelle Bachelet at his home in his first public appearance since he gave a surprise speech in late August at the Democratic National Convention.

President Bachelet presented the senator with her country's highest civilian award the Order to the Merit of Chile in recognition of his opposition to the country's 1973 government overthrow and his work to cut off military aid to dictator Augusto Pinochet.
