As well as being a sportsman, he could sing and play anything too ~ He conducted the Halle orchestra at the age of 22 !!

The sun is shining on my house
It's the start of another day
There's people rushing all around
Going on their way
But I'm just sitting here thinking
What the hell am I trying to do
I've got to make a success of something
Before my days are through

I wanna be famous like my dad

Daddy sailed on the ocean
He was king of the seven seas
And he won at Wimbledon thirty three times
In the same number of years
As well as being a sportsman
He could sing and play anything too.
He conducted the Halle orchestra at the age of 22

I wanna be famous like my dad

I've tried my hand as a butcher
But I cut my hand with a knife
I had a go as a milkman too
But I was caught with the vicar's wife.
I'm pretty good at plenty
But I'm not very good at a thing
If there ain't anything I can do
Then I'll stand on a chair and sing

I wanna be famous like my dad

  • Thank you for uploading another version, the only one I knew (until today) was the one Jeff Phillips sang in 1972.......

  • @ilimaree Thanks, just checked out Jeff's version on which the lyrics are clearer. It answered a lyric question I've had over the last 40 yrs. It is "He won at Wimbledon 32 times in the same number of years", which is indistinct on this version. Only know VT's version (which is the original, as he wrote it ~ produced by Mike Batt). The 'B' side "Love" is great too. Cheers

  • A great single, bought it as a teenager, thanks for uploading and making me feel so old. Played the 'B' side Love even more.

  • @phivosify I think this can be classified as a double 'A' sided single

  • Thank very much for uploading this: This record has been bugging me off and on since I heard it regularly on Radio One in 71. I'd searched every UK Hit Single website & lyric website without success over the last few years until I thought I musty have dreamt the song up! Of course, now knowing that it wasn't a hit explains why I could never find it, as well as thinking it was a female vocalist. Thanks again for putting me out of my misery!

  • :-) The "B" side to Jeff's is " A Love of Your Kind" - one of my favorites.

Cheers :-) I like this version too ;-)

  • Thanks! At last you've posted it.

I've been searching Youtube for a long time to find this song.

I remember it being played on radio 1 by Tony Blackburn when I was a teenager and I love it then even though I don't believe it was a hit.

  • I remember this getting massive airplay on Radio One in 1971, and was surprised that it wasn't a hit. Light, throwaway fluff pop that I haven't heard until tonight for almost 40 years. Scary, but nostalgic all the same. :-)
