Don't totally put those dreams behind. I'm from Los Angeles, CA and have a mutt (lab/chow/pit mix). I started by just learning how to train myself and my dog how to pull, got the equipment and mushed recreationally on dryland. Now, I'm on my way to sprint racing and maybe someday, long distance. I still only have the one dog, but am being mentored by a sprint racer. No one else in my family does anything close to mushing. Finding a mentor is the best advice I can give :) Good luck!

That's so cool! I'm like obsessed with dog sledding! I wish I could run in the Iditarod, but Mom says I probably never will because I don't come from a mushing family. Now, I'm fueled by the desire to race just because of t5he dogs and stuff and I'm fueled by my need to prove her wrong.
