Canada has become a major producer and shipper of methamphetamines and ecstasy, according to a new United Nations report
Canada, which traditionally consumes a lot of cannabis and produces a lot of cannabis, is also a hub now for methamphetamines and ecstasy, which would likely come as a surprise for Canadians," Walter Kemp, a spokesman for the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime.
According to the 314-page report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, organized crime involved in the methamphetamine trade has grown significantly in Canada. Such criminal groups have also increased the amount of methamphetamines they manufacture and export.

Australia, for example, reported that 83 per cent by weight of its total seized imports of methamphetamines came from Canada. In Japan, the figure was 62 per cent.

According to the report, most methamphetamine trafficking in North America supplies U.S. demand, and Mexico and Canada ship the bulk of the drug that is trafficked into the United States.

Organized crime concerns
"With this meth and this ecstasy, it's going all over the world, which means Canada now is part of a global drug trade which really affects all parts of the world," Kemp said.

Kemp said Canadian involvement in the trade is a relatively recent phenomenon, with figures showing a significant increase from 2006 to 2007. The report notes that the rise appears to have begun in 2003.

"It's a manifestation of a more effective market at the level of organized crime, and that's something to be concerned about," Kemp said.

The UN's information suggests the increase is related to Asian criminal organizations, Kemp said, "because some of the raw ingredients are coming from China and some of the end products are going to Asia."

Primary source for ecstasy
The report also found that since 2003-04, Canada has become the primary source of ecstasy-group substances for North American markets, and increasingly for other regions.

In 2007, it was estimated that 50 per cent of domestically produced ecstasy was trafficked outside of Canada," the report said. "Most of this was thought to be destined for the U.S., Australia and Japan.

Japan reported that in 2007, Canada was the biggest source of seized ecstasy.

The report also noted that Canada has grown to be the most important producer of MDMA for North America, and since 2006, all ecstasy laboratories reported have been large-capacity facilities operated principally by Asian organized crime groups.

The report also revealed that demand for marijuana and cocaine is down in Europe and North America. Opium production has also flattened out or even declined.

Canada needs to focus on reducing the demand for the drugs, Kemp said. "What we're saying is, put more emphasis on drug treatment and prevention so that there is less of a market for drugs."

  • I just wish the media would stop saying ecstasy every time they refer to MDMA. I'm sure a lot of it is ecstacy, but they seem to be unaware of the difference. Although, I guess it doesn't matter in the eyes of these narks.

  • You never know what is inside those bags of Rice or packages imported to Australia from India and China some of those distributions from companies selling food or hardware some are secretly hidden away from customs and law like for drugs. Drugs Seized or sold to pharmacies later exchanged on the streets for millions of dollars. If Illegal items like for drugs arrive in the country and are rejected by customs and seized or police other ways is by shore like for the flooding of illegal immigrants.

  • it would be probably one of the worst ideas to DECRIMINALIZE drugs, but i think that countries should take the approach that holland made on drugs and the approach that california made on cannabis.....i think that would help a lot
