About Balkan Cabaret:
The band had a common desire to revisit and perform those wonderful Balkan standards heard in cafes, many from over 50 years ago. Balkan Cabaret is: Joe Finn, violin and clarinet; Michael Lawson, accordion and vocals; Steve Ramsey, guitar, tambura, bugarija and vocals; Mary Sherhart, vocals; Rich Thomas, bass and vocals. These singers and musicians have spent much of the past 35 years studying and learning music and songs from throughout Eastern Europe and are now considered one of the finest Balkan ensembles in the United States. The members of Balkan Cabaret are all excellent musicians and consummate performers. Balkan Cabaret continues its journey into the passing world of starogradski (Old City songs of the Balkans). These songs come from Bulgaria and many of the new countries that have risen from the former Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia. Some of the music is dance based, but most are simply great old songs that have proved to be timeless and are still fondly remembered throughout the Balkans. Balkan Cabaret has been inspired by many warmly receptive performance experiences and remains motivated by realizing the irrepressible emotion this music releases in so many listeners. The unexpected generosity coming from ethnic audiences brought the band a wealth of music sources - mostly old, but some new - with their hope that Balkan Cabaret would perform their beloved songs. Balkan Cabaret is based in Seattle, Washington, and has toured throughout the West and Mid West, including successful shows in Berkeley and Santa Cruz, California; Portland and Corvallis, Oregon; several appearances in Vancouver BC and St. Louis, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois. Mary Sherhart has recorded three cd's of traditional Bosnian sevdah in Bosnia with legendary artist Omer Pobric and is president of the Sevdah North America organization. She also studied and performed traditional singing intensively in Bulgaria in the early 1980's. Balkan Cabaret is grateful and honored to play this music and endeavor to infuse every note with respect and appreciation for the cultures that created these treasures.
