The UP Sacramento Subdivision is a former Western Pacific line that runs from Stockton to Oroville. The line was quite busy back in its heyday, with WP running its California Zephyr trains in both directions, as well as long, heavy freights, although in the later years under new management, the freights became shorter and faster. UP bought WP in 1982, and the entire line from Stockton to Keddie was called the Canyon Sub, but in the early 2000s UP renamed the portion from Stockton to Oroville the Sacramento Sub, due to it being the most major city that portion of the line passed through. For years the Sacramento Sub was UP's way of routing stack trains through the Feather River Canyon, and was part of the route for the z-trains between LATC, CA and Brooklyn, Oregon. In November of 2009, the new tunnels on Donner were finally completed, and the first stack train went over Donner, and they were gradually taken off of the former WP mainline, and drifted over to the Donner Pass route, by late December 2009 all stacks were off of the former WP. The z-trains were routed off in summer of 2009 so they could change crews in Roseville, so they were running the whole Shasta Route, instead of changing over to the former WP line in Marysville. The reefers ran the line for a short period of time during the summer of 2009, and will still occasionally take the former WP line. Passenger trains aren't completely gone with Amtrak's Coast Starlight using the line between Marysville and Sacramento. BNSF also uses this line to get their trains in and out of the Pacific Northwest.

  • Ya. Just a baretable train but it's UP. Also the ZSKDL5, ZDLSK5, ZSKDL3, and the ZDLSK3 are running Sac sub but those usually go through at night. Also ZBRLC and ZLCBR have run Sac sub a couple of times lately.

  • The Sac sub is one of my favorite lines. I'll be trying to catch more BNSFs on it. Also UP is now running the IOASER via Altamont and then the Sac Sub. Do into Haggin right around 10am most days.

  • damn old camera footage JKJK
