The 11th African Union summit has concluded in Egypt with African leaders adopting a resolution supporting the creation of a government of national unity for Zimbabwe through dialogue.
The AU resolution encourages Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to honor their commitment to initiating dialogue with a view to promote peace, stability, democracy and reconciliation.

It also supports the call for the creation of a government of national unity.

The resolution also supports mediation by the Southern African Development Community, or SADC. It calls for continued SADC efforts to assist Zimbabwe's people and leaders resolve problems.

The resolution appeals to states and parties to refrain from any action that may negatively impact on the dialogue.

It also says the political leaders are willing to establish a government of national unity in Zimbabwe through negotiation.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossam Zaki spoke about the debate.

Hossam Zaki said, "Many views were put forward, including very critical views of the Zimbabwe ruling party and president, and the president of Zimbabwe made a lengthy intervention in which he explained his position, his party's position and the developments that took place in Zimbabwe in the last weeks and months which led to the present situation."

The spokesman confirmed that Mugabe had no objection to the AU resolution during the summit.

Zimbabwe held the presidential run-off election last Friday despite opposition leader Tsvangirai's withdrawal from the race.

Mugabe won the one-candidate presidential run-off election. The election commission announced that Mugabe won 85.5 percent of the votes.
