This is a comparison between the Canon 7D's internal microphone against the external shotgun Rode videomic. As you can hear, the Rode picks up a lot more bass as well as a louder volume. The hissing is due in part to the camera's AGC. The Rode is an excellent mic and has a very clear sound, I've made recordings using a computer and they sound great (hissing is gone). It's shotgun style means it picks up sounds in one direction over much greater distances than the Canon 7D's internal mic.

  • so you get a lot of hiss to when you plug directly into the mic input of the canon 7d? I thought I bought a bad camera.

  • @COLDHEARTEDFILMS

Yes, the camera tries to boost sounds automatically when there isn't any. Basically constantly adjusting. If the Magic Lantern firmware ever comes out it will solve it.

  • Very helpful, thank-you.

Did you tripod-mount the videomic, or use a boom?

  • @starfedrogue

the videomic has a hotshoe mount, so it was sitting on top of my camera for the test.

  • great job.
