The Underground Railroad - The Story of John Hatchet

Start: Swamp in Louisiana
1: Lake Lakanardia, Louisiana, met an Underground Railroad operative, took me on his wagon upriver.
2: Somewhere on the Mississippi River to the train tracks to hitch a ride on the cargo train.
3: Take train to Kentucky, ran out of food, had to get off.
4: Run to meet an operative in Kentucky.
5: Lucky soul, took me to Cinicinatti, Ohio.
6: Managed to walk up to Colombus, Ohio
7: Ran my way to Toledo, Ohio.
8: Just outside Lincoln Park, MI
9: Mount Pleasant, MI
10: Cross the Canadian Border at Sault Ste Marie
End: Finally stop running when I hit McQueen.

Start
It was midafternoon when the gunshots went off. Master screamed and grabbed his shotgun and ran into the swamp cursing about just about everything he saw. I took that as my own oppurtunity to make a break for it. For freedom. But its a long, long journey ahead of me.

Hot and sweaty I made it to a hug lake near a huge river. A white man with a colored lamp in his boat rode up to me and asked if I needed a ride. If I remember correctly the woman in my dreams told me to trust the colored lamps, so I nodded and got in. We sped along the Mississippi River and by night we camped out. But even before daybreak he awoke me and told me to hurry. We had to reach the next spot by dawn.

We reached a dock on a hill and approached it. Docking quickly, I ran up the hill to the train tracks, waving goodbye and turning to jump in as the train sped by. I dared it and I made it. The air rushed past my face as the train sped along the tracks to my next destination.

After my food stores ran out, I had no choice but to jump out. When I finally got the courage to do it I wound up somewhere in Kentucky. The man with the colored lamp told me to seek a white man in a suit here, so my search began. I was full and hearty from the supply of meats the other man gave me. So my search was easy.

My search was quick and I found my guy. He was waiting by a wagon stuffed with boxes in a suit and tie. His demeanor was very disturbing and eery, but if he's an undercover operative then its to be expected. We shook on it; he'd take me to Cincinatti, Ohio! I'm a very lucky soul to be given such privilege.

The operative was very sneaky when it came to being discovered. Twice the police almost caught on and he shoved me into a large box. But we got there, I got off his wagon, and we went seperate ways. No questions asked at all. So I shrugged and began to walk my way further north.

It took two days to reach it, but I got there. Columbus, Ohio. Another stop on my journey, but a quick one. I can stay just enough to steal some food and get out; if I stay too long the police will steal me away. So I press on, keep going north.

The streets of Toledo, Ohio were warming. The streetlights are dim, and the police were beating black men like no tommorow. I managed to escape their attacks, but a man I had sat with did not. It saddens me to see such pain in the world but alas I cannot stop it. So I must keep going north.

After a day of walking I found an abandonded boat so I stole it. It was very difficult rowing northwards on a river, but the current was just weak enough to let me through. So I kept rowing and rowing up the river until I reached my next stop Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

I could only take my boat so far until I finally had to collapse from exhaustion. Mt. Pleasant was very isolated and deserted; happily no one could find me. So I rested easy for my next day of escape and freedom. At the crack of dawn I awoke and started running for the border of Canada.

I kept running, two enormous lakes side by side a large bridge and I just kept going. Men were shouting at me from every direction, chasing me, hoping to get me. A slave was on the move and they could get it. But I jumped and landed on Canadian soil. Free. Free at last, free at last. But sadly my journey is still not over. I must make it to a good spot to settle down, maybe start a family.
Stop
After three full out weeks of running, I finally made it. Running, rowing, trusting, I made it to McQueen, Ontario, Canada. My journey is finally over. I can finally sleep peacefully at night, get a job, start my life over. Finally I am free. Free to do whatever I please. The woman in my dreams came true for me; she promised I'd get what I wanted and here it is. My heart explodes from happiness. This is the end of my journal. Good bye, forever. -John Hatchet
