This is a project some classmates and I did for an English education class. We re-wrote the dialogue of the scene into Shakespearean English as an exercise in playing with language.

Our purpose in doing this project was to discover the ways in which students can benefit from an exercise like this. During our post-project reflection, we found we'd done a close reading of the scene and of the characters, as well as an analyses of syntax and grammar (of both modern and Shakespearean English).

For students who are new to Shakespeare, this project can get them used to speaking and thinking in a language that's familiar yet also foreign -- a perfect primer for starting out any of the plays.

For educational purposes, the technical imperfections are unimportant to the project's goal of familiarizing students with Shakespeare's words. However, this sort of project could certainly be improved upon by teaming up with an art teacher.

Lastly, this project was tons of fun to do. Try it in your classroom today!

  • ...and you posted the original scene and NOT the project....why?

  • Hey Tak,

Thanks for pointing this out. Not sure what happened here. The project, with us speaking Shakespearian dialogue over the original subtitles had been up here for ages. We haven't touched it since the upload, so I have no idea what happened. If I have the time, I'll try to find the "hard copy" (as it were) and put it back up.

    Man, that's frustrating.
