A discussion on the transcription process for jazz musicians. As per a request by Jay Green, a visitor of the website.
In this video, I discuss preparation, actual transcription and what to do after you've lifted something from a recording. Those are all the tips I can think of, and they all come from my personal experience of learning solos, songs, compings, arrangements, rhythms (etc.) from great jazz recordings.
I hope you find this useful and please, let me know if you have any questions.

I agree, times change and we should use what we have to transcribe :) Thanks for this!

So do you think it's pointless to pick up a song I like and just try to learn note by note the melody or the solo? I understand what you say about how important is to know the key or the scales that belongs to the solo, cause I've tried to transcribe some solos, but as I don't know what chords are behind, I kinda miss the point of the notes, but I do it anyway just for the fun.

@StromboliKicks Well, knowing the scales and theory only helps to broaden your perspective on the musical content. It's always fun to "just play" for the heck of it. I do it all the time with tunes I love too.
