Significantly the more so, by her using the simile 'MINORITY vs MAJORITY' saying, "What the Muslims were to the BJP, the Maoists are to the Congress" !

Karan Thapar : Hello and welcome to Devil's Advocate. In her latest series of essays, Arundhati Roy sounds deeply dismissive of the Indian democracy and perhaps supportive of the Maoist struggle. Why does she take these positions? That's the key issue I shall explore today with Arundhati Roy.

Let's start with your cynical view of Indian democracy. In your essays, you say the 'Beacon is fading,' you say it's being hollowed out and emptied of meaning, you say that Indian democracy no longer can be relied upon to deliver the justice and stability we dreamt it would. Why have you come to this conclusion?

a democratic way of fighting for one's rights is as well.. And I think she is doing the right thing by raising the right questions in terms of that.. But the other stuff in terms of Genocide and Muslims being in the bottom rung and free market capitalism dictating democracy although debatable is exaggeration I wud say.. Something to take home with you guys. Ever wondered, why in West we (yes, we) have some many high opinionated politically conscious people who are individual dissenters of the wrong that the govern does while we in India have only a few who would speak their mind and dare to be on the sides of angels and be ready to pay the price? The question haunts me to this day. Anybody? What went wrong down the road that reduced us to mindless parrots?

All so disheartening to see that people miss the point. She is not saying that we should switch to socialism or communism, she is saying that we should rather try to do away with whats wrong with our form of democracy now. As other people's comments suggest that we are so much "better off" is not the point. The point is that the government is unconstitutionally undertaking a big land-grab in the Maoist areas owing to corporate interests.

After watching the 4 parts there are various things that I agree and disagree somehow I am not able to conduce a judgement in particular but she is no means a Cassandra but she does validate some serendipity that could lead us to some sort of solution to this. We cant just judge the voilence that the maoist emanate but should also consider their economic and social backgrounds that Arundati has thrown light upon.
