European potager themed vegetable garden. Naturally grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides or fungicides of any kind. This garden includes heirloom vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs on a 2,300 sq ft plot. No synthetic fertilizers used, compost added annually for over 12 years. Includes raised bed Square Foot Garden, wildlife habitat, vertical structures, grafted tomatoes, low tunnel cloche, & companion planting for a four season harvest. Produce donated to Ozarks Food Harvest. This is one of several Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens at Nathanael Greene|Close Memorial Park, 2400 S Scenic Ave., Springfield, Mo.     I really do not get the idea of tiering your raised bed garden? Can you explain the reason for that. It seems to me like you have a lot of soil that is hidden way down in under those tiers that you cannot see or make use of or access, and also create shaded area that is not able to be utilized? Is there something I am not seeing or does it just look cool!? ;-)

    The tiers are to show that there can be variations of height with a Square Foot Garden. Extra soil lends itself to certain crops like carrots for example. More growing medium also holds more water. Shade is minimal depending on orientation and in some areas can be used to your advantage to avoid scorching sun at the height of the heat of summer. Tiers don't have to be just in the corner, they can also be in the center of the bed. Be creative!
