  • Here Ms Sills is 50 years old and just one year away from retirement. The wobble in the voice is evident here and I sympathize with her so much as I lost my own voice to a wobble two years ago, although I was 56 when it happened and not just 50. This is still an outstanding performance and to us Sills crazies it just shows of what mettle she really was made! Bravissima!

  • Here Sills had already been singing in public for 45 years. Her voice, obviously, is fresher in earlier performances of this aria (notably her live rendition 23 June 1969, Dick Cavett show, also in this channel). Her repertoire was staggering, including Aida in her early days (1954-1960). She even sang Carmen, Micaela, AND Frasquita. Taking on heavier roles for her instrument (Norma, Devereux, Bolena) taxed her resources. But what peformances they were!! Brava!

  • A true revolution to singing. A unique phenomenom. Noone sung these roles like Sills before her. And now, almost everyone does.
