The great baritone Giorgio Zancanaro sings Gérard's entrance aria. Zancanaro was excellent: He was one of the best baritones around between the 1970s and 1990s. He sang like a master from the golden era of singing. Not like Joseph Calleja, Anna Netrebko & Co. who are a disgrace.
Julius Rudel conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

    Ecco, bravo!

  • What a wonderful artist! Such natural musicality; specific expression; consummate good taste; and beauty of voice! Just listened to the 1988 La Scala WILLIAM TELL - Zancanaro is fabulous on it! A truly great baritone!

  • To know really how a voice is, one has to hear it in the theater.

    This recording is MAGNIFICENT, indeed.

But I heard Zancanaro in Viena many times and his voice was beautiful but of small-median size and quite lyric.

He didn't have the impact I am hearing in this recording.

However, his diction, excitement, line, color, etc. are superb.

  • 3 dislikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????WTF!?

  • From my standpoint(or ear point!) this very aria is one of the best piece of live performances baritone singing ever recorded.Every aspect of this aria is just perfect.I think those extremly lucky who had witnessed this performance were just amazed after hearing this,if I were there I'd faint from joy

  • @fatherman73

I agree - he has such passion, power, technique etc. etc.!!

  • Zancanaro is hands downs my favorite Gerard. His voice is powerful, brilliant, and very much in line with the technique of the golden age...with singers like Corelli.

  • Look at his compassionate gaze at 2:24! That´s why I love him so much!

  • @PakoChile Yes, I think so.

  • @AfroPoli How would you know that? Are you possibly Zancanaro himself?

  • I am not going to praise him as a singer again. I would just like to mention that the movements he does when he´s imitating the upper class are not as easy as it looks like. I have tried to imitate him, and it´s not easy.

Mr. Zancanaro, if you are reading this: you are the man! I wish I could say it in italian!

After a hard day I come home and look at this clip and I´m happy again. Mille grazie!
