To add to aaroncurley's explanation, a bowed instrument's string generates sound by sticking and slipping against the bow. Without rosin, nothing sticks, and it makes zero sound (like drawing your finger along a guitar string).

rosin is a dried tree extract. rub this on bow(for bowed instruments) to work. it is also needed to apply in violin bow.

@RedMewtwo ive been using it on the same bow for about 4 years and its still good and works much better than normal rosin

@ghkj2 You'll destroy your erhu if you do that for long term, plus your strings will be more fragile.

happy that i only need to rosin one side for cello and not 2 that would take a long time :)
