In Go Swim Straight-Arm Freestyle, Olympic gold and silver medalist Scott Tucker shares his key focus points for developing this increasingly popular freestyle technique. Scotts six focus points work for every level of swimmer -- novice to elite -- and you can start to apply them immediately, next time you go to the pool. The extraordinary swimming footage of Scott, combined with clear, step-by-step instruction, will help you explore straight-arm freestyle to see if its right for you...or help you fine-tune the stroke if you already use it.

  • I'm sorry, but I'm a little confused .. this is just an exercise or do he swims like this competitive , many of your other videos are showing that the bent arm recovery is better , i have never seen any Olympic swimmers do this recovery .. so if you may make it clear WHAT SHALL I DO , thnx

  • @yasermor - there's a ton of Olympic freestylers that swim like this. Scott was on 2 US Olympic Teams swimming like this. We give options, never what is "best"... or at least that's the goal. Gotta try it all and see what's best for you. You gotta figure out what to do... we're just showing you the many different solutions. Anyone telling you there's only 1 way is trying to sell you something. RUN!

  • I have to say the arm motion above water is bad.

  • @hansdoreen - What a pointless comment. Why did you even take the time? David Marsh, one of the winningest coaches in collegiate history, and Scott, double Olympic medalist worked to change Scott's stroke to go faster like this. But I'm sure with your incredible insight of "above water is bad" will really help them create faster swimmers in the future. I'm still amazed by people who post on here. I'm sure your swimming accomplishments are vast, so I can't wait to hear more.

  • Fantastic technique, I have tried to use it, and I must say, I think my rotation has improved, it's as if the straight arm encourages the body to swing sideways more smoothly. Cheers.

  • @goswim098 - after i watched this video i did a lot of searching about different styles involved in freestyle and i figured out a ton of other techniques than the one i was trying to develop ( ian thorpe's hip driven style ) which many videos says it's not preferred to those who didn't grow in a pool. so i started to change to the shoulder driven , it's a hell of a sudden but anyway thanks for your channel which made me realize this and trying to improve

    again thnx a lot

  • This is the way the swim school I am taking teaching us freestyle. I find this video is really helpful to understand the drill.

  • @KaksinMilan In this video, Scott is pulling with bent arms UNDER water, only his recovery is straight. Straight arms under water are actually worse for your shoulder because more drag is generated.

  • I think using straight arm recovery puts you in catch position slightly sooner than bent arm recovery. Not sure if it gives more forward momentum.

  • Nice body roll, and high elbow work. His air work is just a shoulder exercise. He does the same good quality water work as any other Olympic swimmer. Each swimmer has different strength and weakness areas. He is very strong on body roll and high elbow pull, so he is compensating for all the shorter entry from straight air. Just like Phelps is less technically graceful than Thorpe in freestyle, but much more powerful. I am showing this to people for body roll & high elbow techniques.
