This beautiful and intelligent song incorporates many subtle elements and references that make it so wonderful. I was initially drawn to the song by the sadness in the guitar and in the way Sujan sings the lyrics. Of course, then I started paying attention to what the lyrics reveal, and I had no idea what Casimir Pulaski Day meant. I Googled Casimir Pulaski and found some very interesting information on Wikipedia, as well as why this song was released on Steven's album "Illinois."

Recently, my good friend Paul died after a 2 and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer. Paul's wife has been seeing a cardinal or cardinal on regular occassions since he passed. In the song, Sufjan says, "the cardinal hit the window." I researched cardinals and death, and found some amazing information that deepened the meaning of the song that much more for me. Please enjoy my version, which pales in comparrison to the original, however; I trully enjoy playing.
