Interest started at 2yrs&3 months old upon reading the words zinc and calcium for the first time on the gerber veggie cracker box & asked mama what they are. I said they're minerals, some elements of matter that can help children grow healthy. Then he asked what elements of matter are, so I downloaded the periodic table of elements from the internet for him to read & explore. Initially, children love to memorize facts, ideas, & concepts...then it soon leads to understanding and appreciation of the world around them. My son's been particularly interested with the inert gases first followed by the transition metals, the lanthanides and actinides, then the alkali metals & alkaline earth metals, the metalloids, halogens. I found it's been very practical for him in so many ways around the house and outside. He's learning compounds now & how some are harmful and useful and why..which is always the neverending question that can be very exasperating!!
