Rio Bravo is a 1959 American Western film, directed by Howard Hawks. The script was written by Jules Furthman and Leigh Brackett, based on a short story by B.H. McCampbell.

It stars John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Ricky Nelson, with Angie Dickinson, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, Ward Bond, and Walter Brennan.

El Degüello means "no mercy" or "to put to the sword". The literal translation is "a throat slitting". Originally a bugle call, it was used by Howard Hawks in the 1959 flick, "Rio Bravo".

The musical score was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin. His score contains the haunting tune "El Degüello," which is played several times to build tension. A character (Colorado, played by Nelson) identifies the tune as "The Cutthroat Song". He relates the song's historical playing on the orders of Antonio López de Santa Anna to the Texans holed up in the Alamo to signify that no quarter would be given. The tune was used in the following year, over the opening credits of Wayne's film, The Alamo. Composer Ennio Morricone recalled director Sergio Leone requesting him to write "Dimitri Tiomkin music" for A Fistful of Dollars. The trumpet theme is similar to Tiomkin's "Deguella" while the Italian title of Rio Bravo was Un Dollaro D'onore.

  • San Antonio has always been a battle ground. The Spanish fought off Indian attacks, latter at the battle of Medina, the locals with a Anglo army fought the Spanish who had a young officer (Santa Ana) prisoners were executed, the same occurred at Alamo battle years latter. The streets of San Antonio cover the blood spilled as far back as the 1700's. It is and always will be a military city. Doesn't matter the color of your skin or nation, bravery is bestowed to a few.

  • If there is a prettier song out there I have not heard it. Thanks for posting.

  • Esta mamarrachada no es el auténtico Toque degüello

  • "They don't need any accompaniment, Stumpy"

    God I love that film.

  • @victor5812 (part 2) By the way, when the Mexican Army attacked The Alamo they possessed the weapons, numbers and training to easily take it. The problem wasn't with their army, it was their leader - Santa Ana, who is generally regarded as the worst military leader in modern history. I'm not a fan of Mexico; I'm just putting things in perspective. I do concur, though, that anyone crossing the border illegally should be shot if they don't stop when ordered to do so.

  • @victor5812 Actually they also defeated the army of Spain, otherwise how do you think they managed to gain independence? As far as defeating the French? In the 1860's France had one of the largest, best trained and best equipped armies in the world. I'd say that was something to brag about. As far as keeping order? Many of Mexico's problems originate in this country. Most of their drug customers are Americans and most illegal guns in Mexico (where guns are outlawed!) originated in the U.S.

  • Great Song. You can hear it over and over again.

  • @desert1cop Santa Anna dressed as a private, not a woman. You really don't have to make stuff up about the guy to make him seem worse, he's already bad enough :)

  • Did Angie have it off with JFK ??
