referring to an artist as "indie" under terms of buisness simply means that they are either on an indie label, or they produce their own music. it means that they are an independant artist/ group. people call some music (such as MGMT or the Flaming Lips) indie because they have a sound similar to that of independant artists, even though they are on major labels, which just happen to suck major genitalia.
